Mawo is finish

construction of four classrooms, two additional rooms, two bedrooms for teachers and the setting up of a system of rain water collectors

Mawo's community is placed in the district of Dallol. This district, frontier with Eritrea, suffered specially the consequences of the war between Ethiopians and Eritreos. Mawo is 36 kms east from Idiga Hamus. Mawo's community is the second of the woreda Dallol's (district) with a population of 4.038 inhabitants.

PROBLEMATICS

In Mawo's primary school was taught from 1st to 5th grade so that the students who wanted to complete their primary studies had to leave the village or give up studying. Besides the lessons were overcrowded (460 pupils) and were given in poor conditions such as: Presence of water and mud in the classrooms, uneven floor and poor lighting.

Other shortcomings of the school:

- Lack of pedagogical centres, teachers’ lodgings and classroom for handcrafts. The education in the rural areas of Ethiopia attaches importance to the field of handcrafts. So, the new schools built by the government all have a room for this end.

- Absence of reading room: Most of the population lives in huts that have not the necessary equipment in order children could continue adequately with the knowledge acquired in the school. The using of this reading room produces better academic results, since they facilitate the correct accomplishment of the homework set by teachers.

- Absence of teachers lodgings room: the local inhabitants are mainly illiterate and therefore there is none entitled to give the elementary education. For this reason the government sends teachers from other settlements. The teachers who work there, come from villages that are to 45 kms. Away so they night lodgings to stay the night during school days.

- Lack of equipment adapted for the correct follow-up of the lessons (desks and chairs in poor condition).

- Access to water: in Mawo, there is a lack in the access to drinkable water and people must walk hours to gather it from wells, with the great loss of time and the weariness that it implies.

SOLUTIONS

Education:

After several meetings Mawo's community together with the ADCS (local counterpart), it was decided:

To construct 4 new classrooms to teach from 5th to 8 th grades of primary and like this complete Primary Education in the same school:
Adavantages:

- The high rate of illiteracy decreases, improves the quality of education in the whole woreda and allows the children to finish the primary studies which improves their level and the posibility of some of them to become a teacher. This increase in the demand brings about, in a direct way, an improvement in the teaching level and the quality in the education.

- It increases their possibilities of finding a job.

To improve the infrastructure of support of the educational center by means of the construction (using an already existing building) of:

- Reading room a library,

- Pedagogical center

- 2 bedrooms for teachers.

To equip four new classes and the new educational infrastructure with seats made of iron and wood that are lighter, making it easily to remove them, to clean the classrooms more esaily, contributing directly to the improvement of the hygiene of the school.

Access to the water:

Installation of some water collectors in the roofs of the school to increase the access to water.
