Sebata is finish

Construction of four classrooms, an office for the headmaster, a teachers’ room and a store room

Sebata is a small village of 1.370 inhabitants, placed in Irob’s region in the southwest of Alitena and the south of Dohan (the administrative capital of the region). From Dohan, a small path built by the local inhabitants by means of terraces constructed only with stones, reaches Sebata. The arid area presents a great accumulation of stones and scarce farmland.

PROBLEMATICS

Through the direct observation during the process of identification of the project and analysis of the reality of the area, there was verified that great part of the current problems of Irob's region stem from the shortage of educational centers.

In 2006 in Sebata, only existed 1st and 2nd grades of primary education and after finishing them the pupils of Sebata had to walk, from their houses to the most nearby college. Distances that meanta walk from 2 to 3 hours , which implied that year after year the number of pupils who were continuing studying was decreasing. The above mentioned problems were worse in for girls, who were obliged to leave school to develop domestic tasks and the water suply at the age of 8 years.

The conditions in which the lessons were given were very precarious. A few classrooms were roofed with uralita (remains of a refugees' camp of the war with Eritrea) and a very small space, without furniture material or were the main characteristics of the school which the pupils of Sebata attended.

Being so, the main aim of the project was to give the children of Sebata the necessary environment and tools for a fully development that allowed them a worthy project of life and an opportunity of future.

SOLUTIONS

To cope with the mentioned problems it was proposed:

To build 6 classrooms:

• 4 classrooms to teach from 1st to 4th grades of primary education yearly for 120 to 140 children, in suitable conditions to learn to read and write. Having the school in the same village where they reside, ensures the attendance of 95 % of the pupils of 3th and 4th whereas, only 45 % of the pupils continued studying in the nearby village.

• Store room

To supply 6 classrooms with the suitable equipment and (commitment that the ADCS acquired) the whole material necessary for the normal development of the activities of the school.

Select four qualified teachers and the headmaster of school, to guarantee the good development of the educational center (ADCS).

BENEFICIARIES

Direct beneficiaries: 120 students (aprox.) per year plus four teachers.

Indirect beneficiaries: 1.370 inhabitants of Sebata and surroundings

54 % women and 46 % men.
