Magauma is finish

Construction of two classrooms equipped, two additional classrooms and a system of rain collectors

Magauma is a small town of approximately 1.500 inhabitants, placed in Irob's region. This region, frontier with Eritrea,has a population of 31.000 inhabitants who suffered the consequences of the bloody war between Ethiopians and Eritreos.

MAIN PROBLEMS

Education: Magauma had a school that taught only uo to 6th grade of primary education, after this period the students had to walk to nearby villages, Alitena or Awo, if they wanted to deal 7th and 8th grade. In 2005, 28 of 38 pupils gave up their education after concluding 6th year. In addition, the ancient school had many other limitations:

- Lack of reading room: most of the population live in huts that have not the necessary equipment for the children to continue properly their the studies and tasks of the school. The using of this reading room produces better academic results, since it facilitates the correct doing of the students’ tasks.

- Lack of pedagogical centres : the education in the Ethiopian rural areas makes special emphasis in the field of handcraft activities. That’s why, the new schools built by the government have all a room for this end.This room is also used as a store room as much for the handcraft material as for school material.


- Absence of a meeting room: this room is really useful because in the whole town there was no room for people to meet to discuss school matters or other topics.

- Lack of apropiated equipment for the classrooms (desks and chairs in poor condition after 23 years of continued use).

Access to water: in Magauma, they already had a manual water pump and although the water was not apt for human consumption they still drank it, this caused many deseases. In addition, it only rains for 7 or 8 months a year, and it was also used for the animals. The 4 or 5 remaining months of the year, they had to go down to the river (approximately a-2 –hour-trip) to take it, with the loss of time and the weariness that it implied.

SOLUTIONS

Education:

After several meetings with the villages committee and together with the ADCS (local counterpart), it was decided:

• To build two more classrooms, 7 º and 8 º grade, so that the students could finish the basic education in the same town. It is necessary to emphasize that after studyind 8th grade of primary education, it is possible to start teaching in Ethiopia.

To be able to end the primary education in the same town:

- Improves de level of aducation and the number of students that will become teachers, which at the same time increases the number of teachers and as a result the teaching quality.

- It increases the possibility of finding a job. The inhabitants of this settlement have to compete on the labour market of Alitena or Dohan with more qualified people than them. Not to have the primary education skilled excludes them straight away.

• To build two additional classrooms, to give them the necessary support and the tools to study:

- Pedagogical center

- Reading room

To solve the lack of meeting room, a sliding door of wood between these two classrooms was installed what it makes possible to join them punctually and to be able to turn pedagogical center and reading room, in a polyvalent room big enough for the metings of the village comitee.

• 38 desks with wooden seats, were replaced by some made of iron and wood (much lighter), to be able to clean the classrooms easily, contributing directly in the improvement of the hygiene of the school.

Water suply:

Setting up water collectors in the roof of the school, the church and of the priest house. The water that is gathered, suitable for the human consumption, is stored in a reservoir with a capacity of 162.000 liters.

BENEFICIARIES

The children of Magauma (280-300 pupils) benefited from the extension of the primary school and of the improvements in the equipment.

The population of Magauma (1.500 inhabitants) benefited from the improvements in the access to the water and meeting room.
